Opera (dramma tragico) in 2 (or 3) acts Libretto: Salvatore Cammarano [Based: Sir Walter Scott: The bride of Lammermoor] Premier: 26. Sep. 1835, Naples (Napoli), Teatro San Carlo
Recorded: Opera Australia, Sydney
Lucia di Lammermoor was acclaimed as an incomparable triumph both at and after its first performance on 26 September 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and still continues to be regarded as synonymous with this Italian master's operatic art.
Gaetano Donizetti owes his musical foundations to one of the most prominent Italian composers, Giovanni Simone Mayr, who enabled his master pupil to take composition lessons with the great music theorist Padre Stanislao Mattei in Bologna, and immediately afterwards arranged him a contract with a touring opera company. Donizetti's real ascendancy began in Rome, after Gioachino Rossini had withdrawn from opera, Vincenzo Bellini had died, and before Giuseppe Verdi came to assume a leading place among Italian opera composers. This 1986 recording presents Joan Sutherland in her absolute showpiece role of "Lucia", which also heralded her artistic break-through in 1959.
